Chin Augmentation

The chin, like any other facial feature, can throw the entire face out of balance if it is over- or undersized. In many cases, a weak or poorly defined chin may cause the nose, ears, or other features to appear oversized when they are not. San Francisco facial plastic surgeon Dr. Albert Chow has performed countless chin augmentation procedures for patients in the Bay Area, using a variety of techniques to give them the attractive, balanced facial contours they desire.

Chin Augmentation Overview

Chin augmentation typically involves enlarging and reshaping the chin either with an artificial implant or by altering the position of the existing bone. Dr. Chow’s goal when performing chin augmentation for our San Francisco-area patients is to balance the size and shape of the chin with the overall shape of the face as well as with the patient’s ears, nose, and mouth. Chin augmentation can usually be performed entirely through incisions inside the mouth, leaving no visible scarring on the face and an amazingly realistic final result. After recovery, the patient will enjoy a stronger jawline and a more attractive facial shape.

Chin Implants

After realistic goals and expectations have been established during the initial chin augmentation consultation, Dr. Chow supervises the creation of the chin implant to ensure that its shape and size perfectly complement the surrounding features on the patient’s face. The implant is typically shaped something like the chin guard of an athletic helmet, allowing it to fit snugly around the bone of the chin beneath the flesh. It is created from a synthetic material that is designed to be safe for insertion into the human body and to create the most realistic look and feel possible.

In most cases, Dr. Chow inserts chin implants through incisions made inside the mouth behind the lower lip. This approach allows him to avoid creating any visible incisions for the most natural-looking chin augmentation results possible.

Sliding Genioplasty

Sliding genioplasty is a procedure that allows Dr. Chow to perform chin augmentation using the patient’s own bone. An excellent alternative to chin implants, sliding genioplasty involves advancing the patient’s natural chin into a position more complementary to his or her features, bridging the gap with small pieces of bone. Although there are some risks involved in sliding genioplasty, including infection and bleeding, it is often the best option for those patients who want to achieve natural-looking, permanent results. Contact our San Francisco practice today to learn more about this chin augmentation procedure or to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Chow.

BOTOX® Cosmetic for Wide Faces (Ethnic)

For patients, an overly large masseter muscle (the muscle on the outside of the jaw) may cause their jaws appear too square or wide. Dr. Chow may be able to use BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to reduce the size of this muscle and create a narrower jaw. Injecting BOTOX® into this muscle paralyzes it so that the jaw becomes smaller. Improvement occurs gradually, and several courses of BOTOX® injections may be necessary to achieve the desire result. One of the main benefits of using BOTOX® Cosmetic for creating a narrower jaw is that the procedure requires no downtime.
