If you would like to enhance the overall appearance of your face, it’s important to consider subtle changes that can be made that have remarkably dramatic effects. For instance, rather than getting multiple surgical procedures, sometimes all you need is just one. When you come to the San Francisco plastic surgery practice of Dr. Albert Chow, he will assess your situation and devise the best possible treatment plan for you and your needs.

About Rhinoplasty Surgery

One such surgery that is both subtle and yet dramatic at the same time is rhinoplasty. Also know as a nose job, a rhinoplasty is performed in order to improve the appearance of the nose. It will involve the adjustment of the structures of the nose to achieve the desired effect. A skilled San Francisco cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Chow can alter the shape of your nose very little and yet achieve a greater sense of harmony for your entire face.

Best Candidates for Rhinoplasty

The bet candidates for rhinoplasty are people who have issues with the size, shape, or overall appearance of their nose. They should be in good overall health and have a positive and realistic attitude about what the surgery will be able to accomplish.

In addition to the aesthetic concerns above, rhinoplasty can be performed as a reconstructive surgery if a person’s nose was broken or injured. Rhinoplasty can also be performed as a medically necessary surgery to reshape the nasal passages and relieve respiratory conditions.

How Rhinoplasty is Performed

San Francisco rhinoplasty can be performed either as an open rhinoplasty or a closed rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty will involve incisions made entirely within the nostrils. By contrast open rhinoplasty will involve an incision made between the nostrils through which the surgeon will be able to work. Open rhinoplasty allows surgeons more freedom and ability to alter the structures of the nose.

Recovering From Rhinoplasty

In the first few days after rhinoplasty, it’s common for patients to experience some discomfort, swelling, nosebleeds, and bruising around the nose. This can be managed through the delicate use of cold compresses, pain medication, staying well hydrated, keeping the head elevated, and getting lots of rest. Patients should avoid touching their nose and blowing their nose. If a patient wears glasses, the patient will be advised to switch to contacts or to hold the glasses by hand rather than allowing the glasses to rest on the bridge of their nose.

A Week After Surgery

Approximately one week after the rhinoplasty, you will have a follow-up visit to the office. At this time, any nasal splints or packing will be removed as well as any sutures or stitches. By this point, patients will have healed enough to return to work and resume most normal activities. As with most facial cosmetic surgery recoveries, it’s important that patients avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least two mores weeks as this can lead to injury or put undue pressure on the face. You’ll still want to avoid blowing your nose for a few more weeks since the nose is still healing.
